First episode of "No Relation" debuts online

SWP Radio's newest podcast, "No Relation," released its first episode today on swpradio.com. Designed to cover a variety of unrelated topics, the show is hosted by SWP president Scott Winer. The premiere features a four-person panel discussing topics ranging from Mark Mangino's resignation from the Kansas football program to the worst holiday gifts.

"No Relation" marks SWP's first foray into larger-scale studio production. Having several in-studio and remote guests on at once presents a more difficult task for Winer, who also produces the show. "It's not the easiest thing I've ever done, but I like the idea of pushing ourselves and our resources," he said. "Instead of just getting more equipment, we're finding out what more we can do with what we have. That's my kind of challenge."

The first episode is currently available for download on the SWP Radio site.

SWP to launch new podcast

Next week, SWP will launch its first new podcast since the summer. The show will be hosted by SWP founder Scott Winer and will feature a roundtable discussion format, covering a wide variety of current events and other local and national topics. Each episode will include panelists participating in studio, by phone, via Skype or all of the above.

"The idea is for it to be a little different each time," Winer said. "Sometimes we'll have five or more people. Other times we'll just have two. It's a great outlet for us to try out a lot of different things."

The first show is planned for Friday, December 18.

SWP Radio completes first month of "58% Geek"

SWP Radio began producing the "58% Geek" podcast last month. Hosted by Phil Martinez and Jared Wirth, "58% Geek" began as a blog before the podcast was started to supplement written content. The show is the first to use SWP's newly-revamped podcasting studio in Lawrence.

The show covers innovation, technology and a potpourri of other geek-related topics. It has recorded 11 episodes. New episodes are released on iTunes and through 58percentgeek.com.

"The Bois" to record 25th Episode at Wilde's Chateau 24

"The Bois" will record it's first-ever show with a live audience at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 19th at Wilde's Chateau 24 (2412 Iowa Street). Patrons must be 18 to enter. Admission is $5 for those 18 to 21. There is no cover charge during the show for anyone 21 or older. The club's weekly Pride Night will immediately follow.

The podcast, which premiered in February, revolves around its two openly gay hosts "Scottie" and "Toddie," SWP Founder and Executive Producer Scott Winer and SWP Creative Director Todd Pickrell, respectively. The two conduct interviews as part of their quest to learn about the "Straight Lifestyle." In doing so, they have welcomed a variety of guests, either in person or by phone.

Before each episode, guests complete the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG), an elaboration on the Kinsey Scale that was introduced in 1993 by Dr. Fritz Klein in his book The Bisexual Option, to help characterize their own sexual orientation. "The guests drive the show, and the KSOG is a great way to start an open dialogue about sexuality and sexual orientation," said Winer, who also serves as the show's producer.

Of the twenty-two guests appearing on the show through July, ten have identified as straight, seven as gay, three as bisexual and two as lesbian. Guests have included students and faculty at The University of Kansas as well as self-identified fans from as far away as Washington and California and as nearby as Lee's Summit and Wichita.

Episodes of "The Bois" are available for free download at the SWP Radio website or on the iTunes Store.

"The Oread Express" Returns to SWP Radio

SWP Radio has announced plans to produce new episodes of its inaugural podcast, "The Oread Express," for the first time since 2007. SWP Executive Producer Scott Winer made the announcement Friday during Episode #14 of "Smokey and the Bear."

The show will mark the return of frequent collaborator Fred Davis to SWP. "Fred has been captured and is being held against his will in Columbia, Missouri," Winer said Friday. Davis, who Winer described as "a die hard KU guy," recently moved to the home of the Jayhawks' border rival after serving as a crime reporter for The Topeka Capitol-Journal and The Beaumont Enterprise.

Like the original, Winer and Davis will host the show, except Winer will be in SWP Radio's Lawrence studio while Davis will appear weekly by phone.

"The Oread Express" is expected to premiere later this month. Scott Winer is the producer.

SWP Relaunches "The Slog"

Scott Winer Productions has revived and revamped Scott Winer's "The Slog," originally launched as a "pseudo-blog" that accompanied the earlier online column series "Scott's Shots." Both were largely comprised of critiques of various live television shows, typically sports and music/variety.

Designed by SWP Creative, "The Slog" is now online at http://www.scottwiner.tv/slog.

Popularity Surges for "The Bois"

"The Bois," one of the newest projects from Lawrence-based media production company Scott Winer Productions (SWP), has been downloaded 3,579 times (61.7/day) since its debut in early February, with 2,509 downloads (80.9/day) in March alone. The podcast revolves around its two openly-gay hosts "Scottie" (SWP Founder and Executive Producer Scott Winer) and "Toddie" (SWP Creative Director Todd Pickrell) and their quest to learn more about the "Straight Lifestyle" by interviewing mostly young adults of varying sexual orientations, many of whom are students at The University of Kansas.

Episodes of "The Bois" are available for free on the iTunes Store and at the SWP Radio website (swpradio.scottwiner.tv). The show is currently featured as one of the top eight "New and Notable" sexuality podcasts on iTunes.

SWP Radio has successful first month

Scott Winer Productions has announced listener results for the company's first month of new podcasts on SWP Radio in two years. SWP Radio launched four podcasts in late January and early February — Smokey and the Bear, 2 Dudez Chillin', The Bois and Enhanced with Elliot Metz — which premiered January 30 and 31, February 2 and 10, respectively.

"The Bois" emerged as SWP Radio's most popular podcast in its first four episodes. The show led with more than 1,050 downloads, accounting for over 80% of all SWP Radio downloads. "Smokey and the Bear" became the second most downloaded show with more than 10.5% of all SWP Radio downloads, releasing 7 episodes, including a two-part episode that premiered Friday, February 27. In only two episodes, "Enhanced" and "2 Dudez Chillin'" took 5% and 2.75% of all downloads, respectively. "2 Dudez Chillin'" is currently on hiatus, pending changes to the show's format.

SWP Radio podcasts netted more than 1,300 downloads in February. The company plans to expand "The Bois" from a weekly to a bi-weekly schedule with other shows continuing as planned.

Taped before a live audience September 29th in Hansen Hall at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at The University of Kansas, the pilot addresses whether or not all United States combat forces should be withdrawn from Iraq by May 2010.

Pedro Irigonegaray, a prominent civil rights attorney in Topeka, Kan., and Fred McClure, a Washington, D.C. attorney and former White House Director of Legislative Affairs, served as the advocates. Former CBS News anchor Bill Kurtis moderated the program.

SWP to Launch "Little Scottie" Comic, Website on October 24th

Scott Winer Productions has finalized plans to unveil the company's first ever web comic, "The Adventures of Little Scottie," on Friday, October 24 at www.littlescottie.com.

The comic chronicles the life and times of Little Scottie, "a young boy with poor luck," said SWP Creative Director Todd Pickrell, the comic's co-creator and illustrator. "He's a kid that grew up too fast, doesn't really know how to deal with adult issues but is somehow involved in them."

Based on SWP Executive Producer Scott Winer, the character of Little Scottie has the body of a child and the facial features of an adult. "It's kind of ridiculous and that whole element adds humor to it, but I think with it being a little kid, we'll be able to make light of issues that would otherwise come off as more serious," said Pickrell. "I don't think it will be totally based on Scott. He'll be an inspiration for it, but it's not going to be his life."

"There's definitely a striking resemblance that I think is funny, but it's really about exploring a new medium for us," said Winer, "Little Scottie" co-creator. "I'm happy to sacrifice my name and likeness for the cause."

"Little Scottie" is SWP's first owned and operated venture produced solely for the web. "We're always trying to reach new audiences by expanding the kinds of content we create," Winer said. "This is yet another step toward that goal."

Pickrell, who oversees SWP Creative, the division of Scott Winer Productions responsible for web design and content delivery, believes that this platform provides an opportunity to reach a lot of people in an open market.

"A web comic is a format that a wide variety of people can experience," he said. "There's no sort of jury deciding what gets put out there. It's something anyone can decide to start up, but I'd like for 'Little Scottie' to be more sophisticated than the average web comic. It's not going to be for someone that's looking for obvious humor. "
